Controversial Artwork

‘La-Última-Cena’-–-Leonardo-Da-Vinci.jpg

This artwork is perhaps one of the most controversial ones in history. "The Last Supper" by Leonardo DaVinci portrays Mary Magdalene as a prostitute. This painting is very well done since it perfectly conveys what DaVinci was trying to show. Leonardo believed that Mary Magdalene was indeed a prostitute and this would damage the image of Christ since this woman was always near him. Of course there was a negative reaction towards this painting, especially in christians because this image diminished Jesus' pure and sacred identity.

Art as imitation: This artwork depicts an extremely controversial idea since it relates Jesus Christ with a prostitute. However, this is very realistic for the painter because by expressing this idea he introduces a Jesus that seems more like a normal man in the way that he has sex with a woman. The painting doesn't go in depth to how the relationship of Jesus and Mary Magdalene was but this is what we can infer and what the author wills to instill in our thoughts.

Art as communication: The artist tries to communicate how he feels about the bible and what he thinks of the truth behind Christ. Leonardo DaVinci was considered to be an existentialist and he would always question what many believed. His paintings revealed his inquisitive side.

Art as education: This painting would certainly not be viewed as religious education. It goes against the ideas of the church and against the thoughts of many generations of human beings. However, this painting gives a message that few people gave before. It gives a coherent and new idea about christianity. This idea can be adopted by anyone in order to build another story of what happened.

Dying Heartbeat

Sometimes people really make you wonder, and this scientific experiment does just that. On October 31, 1938, John Deering sat down and willingly put his life in the hands of another. He had volunteered to participate in an experiment that would kill him, and seemed to be okay with it due to the fact that he was due to be executed anyhow. The experiment was conducted by Stephen Besley. A prison guard put a black hood on Deering to cover his head and placed a target on his chest. The prison guard would be the one to fire the shot, but beforehand, an electrocardiogram was connected to Deering’s chest in order to read his hearts beats. Before being shot, his heart was racing at 120 beats per minute. Once he heard the okay to fire, his heart raced to 180 beats per minute. He was then shot 4 times, one bullet piercing the right side of his heart. According to the electrocardiogram, his heart went into a spastic rhythm for about 4 seconds and then 15.4 seconds later, his heart stopped.

A bullet to the heart kills you. Also that when you’re about to die with a gun aimed at your chest, you’re more than likely to be deathly (no pun intended) afraid. After the experiment, a press was given in which Dr. Besley said, “he put on a good front. The electrocardiograph film shows his bold demeanor hid the actual emotions pounding within him. He was scared to death.”

A right or a risk

80610730.jpg

It is a right for a patient to know how's their health, however, this can many time be a risk. In the case of a terminal disease, the person can enter a state of learned helplessness and later depression. Some patients even commit suicide. Some patients are more vulnerable than others like elders in contrast with a young and strong man.

In the United States, it is a law that the patient gets informed of their condition.

In Honduras, close family members have the right to reserve any explanation in order to not affect the patient's emotional state of mind.

In Cuba, doctors are many times forced to inform the patients about their problems because they have to deal with their condition on their own.

I believe that this decision depends on the patients personality and if he or she is strong enough to live with his or her disease.

Historical Analysis Post

Origin: The exact origin is not specified, but I believe that it comes from a source that is not Honduran or Venezuelan because it doesn't seem to take sides and we see things from an outside perspective.

Purpose: This tennis game represents the situation with Mel Zelaya in Honduras and Venezuela. The purpose is to show that the situation is tough like this match and that both sides stand still with their position.

Value: This gives the situation a more simple look but a sufficiently understandable one from an outside perspective.

Limitations: We ignore the exact source.

Unethical Experiment

Milgram's Obedience Experiment

In 1961 Stanley Milgram made the headlines with his hugely controversial and unethical study into human obedience to authority. Taking place only months into the trials of WWII Nazi leaders, Milgram aimed to discover if those who committed the atrocities in concentration camps were truly evil people, or simply following orders from a higher figure.

Participants were given the role of ‘teacher’, and told by the experimenter to administer electric shocks to the ‘learner’, a fellow participant in a separate room, if they answered questions incorrectly. The ‘learner’ was a confederate of the experimenter, and no actual shocks were given.

With every wrong answer, participants were told to up the voltage of the shock administered, and as the volts increased, the ‘learner’ was heard to scream, cry and beg the ‘teacher’ to stop.

Shockingly, under the verbal prompting of the experimenter, 65% of participants continued to shock the ‘learner’, even after the screaming gave way to silence, until three shocks of 450 volts had been administered.

Although no actual electric shocks occurred, this study caused huge psychological issues for participants who had been lead to believe they had seriously harmed, or even killed, somebody.

Milgram certainly proved his point that individuals are capable of evil acts when obeying authority, but the amount of pressure he put on the volunteers during the experiment and amount of distress they experienced rightly makes this experiment very unethical.

To what extent do we need evidence to support our beliefs in different areas of knowledge?

Culture

These people revolt against the government and private companies blaming them for their poor conditions and the overthrow of their former president who wanted to change the constitution. They believe that their rights are being violated and that their former president should be re-established in his office.

School

Many times, I've gotten the same grade as a friend and I am questioned about it by my teacher. However, with my exam I can prove that I have different mistakes as my friend.

Personal Life

My parents keep telling me that I have to go to church because they are catholic, but I find other ways to be calm and to stay in order with other people as well as with myself.

Emotions

Fear/Hatred

Snakes are for me the worst thing in the world. I hate them and I would kill them all.

Love

This song is for me one of the most greatest expressions of love. It impacts me how the singer loves the girl he's talking about. I love music.

Happiness/Laughter

It's vital for me to laugh as much as I can. This video makes me laugh a lot and it is not a cruel prank.

Topic: "Art is a lie that brings us nearer to the truth" (Pablo Picasso).

Opinion: Art is the reflection of our thoughts and feelings. It may not be something concrete, but it says a lot.

Visual Arts

In this self-portrait, the mexican artist Frida Kahlo provides a deep look into the evolving condition of a woman who battled many difficulties in her life and by combining much surrealist-type imagery, this becomes a very revealing depiction of her inward state.

Literature

The book The House of The Spirits reflects many aspects in the life of the author Isabel Allende. Alba is a character that can be related to the author.

It can be seen as unethical and unfair but in Israel, men, women, and elders are required to join the army in order to defend their country against terrorism. Prime minister Ehud Olmert argues that this is absolutely necessary since the start of Zionism.

The frontier between North Korea and South Korea has been enforced by North Korean leader Kim Jong II and is considered to be the most armed and guarded frontier in the world. His purpose is to retain the North Koreans from leaving to South Korea, since it is like a prison for many.

He started as my favorite singer, but over time he became my voice. I think just like him. He is there in my good and bad times. He listens to me and he answers me back. He's my most important companion. I'm never alone with him.
These are the rest of my friends. They are irreplaceable for me and I would do anything for them. M(l)
This is my best friend Alejandra. I spend most of my day with her since we are also neighbors. She's a bit crazy but she makes me happy.
This is a great picture because I love to play with my favorite nephew Andres and with my dog Missy. I miss them a lot since they live in Tampa.
This is one of the most important aspects in my life: Alessandra Ambrosio. She's not exactly my idol, however she motivates me to go to the gym:).
